How To Decide Which Starcraft 2 Race To Choose
Posted in Games on 09/01/2010 02:57 pm by AMAUserStarcraft 2 is a very complex game. Each match up is quite different and requires different build orders and approaches. That’s why you have to practice a lot of different match-ups with your race. Now you understand why playing as Random is so difficult and to be honest with you, not many players make the cut to be Random.
With GomTV announcing the biggest e-sports event in the history, many players are looking to really master their race so they can get a piece of the pie. Tournaments and Cups get announced weekly and if you strive to perfect your skills you can make a decent living off of this.
To help you get started on your journey I will take a quick look at the core strategy of each race and then point you to a place with further information. Take your pick!
Core Terran Strategy
Terran players really like to turtle. In the early to early mid game, Terrans can do really well on just two bases (Main + natural expo) thanks to Orbital Commands and MULEs.
Terrans can also get great map control very easily with Vikings and Scans. Being a Terran player, you have no reason not to have good intel about your opponent. If you do really well in scouting, execute a good build order without getting supply locked, you can do a dangerous timing push to gain an advantage early on.
Terran vs Terran is a bit special. In Terran vs Terran the emphasis is on map control. TvT is often compared to chess with both players fighting for territory until the strength of one of the enemy tips over and the other player gets crushes.

Main Zerg Strategy
Zerg players have to be very strong in macro. One of the strengths of the Zerg race is that they can change their complete army composition in the blink of an eye.
You need to macro up and build a strong economy early on so you can quickly adapt later in the game by building all the necessary tech buildings and getting upgrades. Sacrificing one or two Overlords in the mid-game can be crucial to your success and is a small investment if it wins you the game.
Many new Zerg players also neglect expanding their creep and building more units against timing pushes. I’ve seen numerous Zerg players win thanks to this advantage.

Main Protoss Strategy
It might not look like it, but Protoss are very difficult to play. To really master this race you need both micro and macro skills. One of the key elements is the Force Field of the Sentry.
When it comes to competitive intelligence, the Protoss race has it relatively easy thanks to their Observers. There is no reason not to use them.
Use this intel wisely to determine which tech buildings to get and which structure to Chrono Boost at any given time. In many situations a single chrono boosted upgrade can save you a game you would definitely lose otherwise!
If your macro skills are stronger than your micro skills, get Warp Gates as fast as possible and then play aggressive Pylons to outmaneuver your opponent. If he plays armored units, add some Immortals to your army. If he plays light units, get Colossi.
If your macro skills allow it, consider getting some Phoenixes to harrass the enemy’s eco-line. If you’re playing against a Terran, focus out the MULEs – one MULE is worth a few hundred minerals!
We didn’t even scratch the surface here – thanks to the interesting abilities of Protoss units, the game can get very complex. There are many more advanced strategies like playing Dark Templar harrass.
